On occasion, water districts have found E. coli in their drinking water. Recently there was an incident in the Portland, Oregon water system. Residents were issued a "Boil Water Alert", which means that before drinking their tap water, residents needed to boil it before it was consumed.

Because there is no NSF certification standard for removing E. coli, the EPA encourages consumers in affected areas to boil their water and not rely on a water filter for protection.
